Meditation
Mindfulness means paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally.
Mindfulness & Meditation
Meditation
Breath counting meditation is a simple mindfulness technique used to calm the mind and improve focus by counting breath cycles (inhale/exhale) from one to ten. It acts as a mental anchor, where you focus on the sensation of breathing, restart at one if your mind wanders, and restart at one after reaching ten.
Below is a little guide on how to practise in your own time:
* Set up: Sit comfortably, close your eyes and allow your body to relax.
* Observe: Begin by watching your natural breathing pattern without forcing it.
* Count: Silently say “one” at the end of the first exhale, “two” after the second all the way up to ten. Then reset and begin again.
* Handle Distractions: If your mind wanders (which is normal) or you lose count, try and return your focus to the breath and begin at one again.
Meditating at Zen Combat Academy
At Zen Combat Academy, training goes beyond physical. The “Zen” in the name represents something deeper — clarity, control and presence.
Martial arts challenges the body, but it also shapes the mind. The ability to stay calm under pressure, to remain focused when things get tough and to carry yourself with awareness.
That’s why we’ve introduced an optional short 5-minute meditation at the end of every session.
Every one of us trains Martial Arts for a different reason. You may do it to keep fit or to learn self defence, but one main thing it helps with for every student is stress relief. Hitting pads, boxing, kickboxing, throwing, sweeping, sparring the whole lot!
After 2/3 hrs of solid training – it’s then important to take a minute to tune in. Slowing your breathing, settling your thoughts, and becoming aware of how your body feels after training. It’s a moment to reset and build mental discipline in the same way we build physical discipline on the mats.
Over time, this simple practice helps improve focus, reduce stress and develop a stronger connection between mind and body.
Train hard. Be present. Finish with purpose.
