Martial Art and an Olympic Sport

In 1909 Judo was recognised by Japan as an Olympic Sport. It was then added to the Olympic Program at the 1964 games in Tokyo.

Judo is based on traditional Japanese JiuJitsu and its descendant arts include Sambo and Brazilian JiuJitsu. The objective of Judo is to throw or sweep an opponent to the ground and immobilise or subdue them with a hold, an armlock or a choke.

Several Judo practitioners have made an impact in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) including;

  • Ronda Rousey
  • Khabib Nurmagomedov
  • Kayla Harrison
  • Fedor Emelianenko
  • Oleg Taktarov
