Jeet Kune Do

What is Jeet Kune Do?

The Original Mixed Martial Art (MMA)

Jeet Kune Do is Simply to Simplify – Bruce Lee. Bruce Lee’s Jeet Kune Do is style of no style, it’s a concept and philosophy. Jeet Kune Do (the way of the intercepting fist) is the art of intercepting. Bruce Lee was way ahead of his time – cross training in different arts was unheard of in 1960s & 1970s, before MMA was even popular .

Jeet Kune Do is more of set of principles and training methods that encourage the student to develop your own fighting style. Bruce Lee studied Wing Chun for several years under Grandmaster IP MAN. After the famous fight with Wong Jack Man , Bruce believed that marial art styles had become too rigid and not realistic and that martial arts should evolve , and real fighting is unpredictable and spontaneous.

He taught that a good martial artist should ” be like water.” Bruce Lee researched various arts incorporating principles and training methods from other arts into the system Wing Chun, Fencing, Western Boxing and Judo. Bruce Lee never wanted to put a name to his art after much deliberation Jeet Kune Do was coined in 1967. Jeet Kune Do has four guiding principles: -Simplicity -Economy of motion -Longest weapon to the nearest target -Always thinking of hitting.

4 Ranges of Combat

Bruce Lee believed that to be a truly skilled martial artist, you must be effective across all ranges of combat: kicking, punching, trapping, and grappling. At a time when most Martial Arts focused on a single range, his integration of these ranges laid the foundation for Jeet Kune Do to become the first official Mixed Martial Art.

Kicking Range (Kickboxing)

This is the furthest distance from an opponent, where attacks are delivered primarily through kicks with the stronger side forward. Techniques may include roundhouse kicks, sidekicks, front kicks, oblique kicks, and inverted kicks. The objective at this range is to maintain distance, control space and prevent the opponent from advancing.

Punching Range (Boxing)

At mid-range, fighters are close enough to strike with punches.

Common techniques include jabs, crosses, hooks, uppercuts, straight blasts, backfists and elbows. The focus here is on precision and timing, landing effective strikes while minimising the risk of being hit, often by intercepting the opponent’s movements.

Trapping Range (Wing Chun)

At close range, where contact with the opponent’s arms is possible, trapping techniques come into play.

One key drill kept in Jeet Kune Do is Chi Sao, or “sticky hands,” which develops the opponent’s sensitivity and reflexes. The goal is to control and immobilise the opponent’s arms, creating openings for quick and efficient strikes while maintaining your defence.

Grappling Range (Judo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu)

This is the closest range of combat, involving clinching, pummelling, sweeps, throws, and ground fighting.

Drawing from Martial Arts such as Judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, techniques include takedowns, joint locks, and chokes. Success in this range depends on control, pressure and leverage.
