Jeet Kune Do Grading

Zen Combat Academy's Jeet Kune Do Grading day. Highlights and hard-earned progress!

Today at Zen Combat Academy, we held a JKD grading, and it was nothing short of intense. Three solid hours of training, focus and technique – all towards achieving well-deserved JKD Certifications for our students. For those new to the world of martial arts, let me first explain what JKD is and why it’s such a crucial part of what we do here.

What is Jeet Kune Do?

Jeet Kune Do (JKD) is a martial arts founded by the legendary Bruce Lee. Unlike traditional martial arts, JKD isn’t confined to rigid forms or patterns. It’s more focused on efficiency, directness and freedom of expression.

The idea is simple: “Absorb what is useful, reject what is useless, and add what is essentially your own.” – Bruce Lee.

JKD takes elements from various martial arts styles and strips them down to their most functional and effective forms. It’s all about adapting to real-life combat situations. There’s a balance between striking, grappling, trapping, and footwork, with fluidity being the key to everything.

The Grading…Bowing before you begin!

The grading session kicked off with JKD’s footwork. Every student knows that solid footwork is the foundation of effective combat, allowing you to easily close the distance or evade strikes. From there, it was straight into JKD’s essential drills including:

Pak Sao to Pak Sao, Waum Pak, Bong Sao Lap Sao, Lap Sao Switch, Harmonious Spring, Cross Energy Drills, Chi Sao, Reference Point amongst many others. Students also focused their efforts towards takedowns and sweeps.

To wrap it all up we put everything together in JKD sparring. This is where students test themselves, applying everything they’ve learned.

But the grading wasn’t just about the physical elements. We also dove deep into Bruce Lee’s 5 Ways of Attack, which are essential knowledge. Each student had to demonstrate not just their understanding of the 5 Ways of Attack but also their ability to apply them.

By the end of the three hours, it was clear that everyone had put in the hard work and the results showed.

Recognition of achievement

After all that hard training, we awarded certificates to those who levelled up in their JKD journey. This is always a special moment for the academy, as it represents not just progress in skill but growth in discipline and understanding of Jeet Kune Do.

Congratulations to:

  • Jonathan for achieving – Student Level 5 Jeet Kune Do Certificate
  • James for achieving – Student Level 5 Jeet Kune Do Certificate
  • Tom for achieving – Assistant Instructor Jeet Kune Do Certificate
  • Andrea for achieving – Level 2 Instructor Jeet Kune Do Certificate

Each of these students has shown skill, perseverance and commitment to mastering both the physical and mental aspects of Jeet Kune Do.

The Journey continues

Every JKD grading is a reminder that the path of martial arts is one of constant learning. At Zen Combat Academy, we believe that true mastery is never reached – it’s an ongoing journey, one where we continuously improve ourselves, both inside and outside of the Academy.

”Learning is never cumulative, it is a movement of knowing which has no beginning and no end..” – Bruce Lee.

To all our students: well done today!
